The ABC's of Chernarus (Basic Sign Reading)

Intro

Are you tired of trying to get a sense of direction? Coming across a signand scrolling around the map trying to match the cyrillic characters to theirEnglish counterparts?Has this ever been you?The ABC's of Chernarus (Basic Sign Reading)Well, after this quick guide, and a few minutes of practice, you'll be reading signs. Not just recognizing the signs youcommonly come by, ACTUALLY READING them. More than only road signs-building signs, billboards, you name it.

Here's the Basics...

Here's a table for visual aid...The ABC's of Chernarus (Basic Sign Reading)Now I'm not saying you have to memorize the cyrillic alphabet. All I'm suggesting, is that knowing a few rules and common structer of the Russian alphabet/language will be a HUGE help when more villages and towns are introduced.First things first: There are six Russian letters that match their English counterparts, by both pronunciation, and form; A, E, K, M, O and T.You see those, they are what they are. Simple, right?Side notes: The "Э" is also an "E", and "Б б" looks like an English "B b" with amissing chunk or a tail so treat it that way. The "? g" should be replaced with "д g" and "Ч" is "Ch". (ie: Черногорск {Chernogorsk} and Солнечный {Solnichniy})Now let's take it up a notch. The "Y" is fairly common, yet in DayZ the "Y"is represented by "Ы" - the 'sometimes' "Y" ie: Vybor (Выбор) Go ahead, try to find an example where this doesn't hold true. If you come back with Dubky orNovoselky, read ahead. The "Й" is common at the endingof words after a "Y" or as a "Y". It is also pronounced (long "Y" or 'ee' sounding)and sometimes translated as "Y". Ie: Новый Собор (Novy Sobor) and Ostry (Острый).Also common is the "Sh" represented by "Ш" ie: Grishino (Гришино)Using the above principles- Вышное (Vyshnoye) and Камышово (Kamyshovo)don't seem as daunting, do they? Now, let's get confusing. There seems to be a lot of P's and R's in DayZ.The cyrillic "P" is an English "R" and "P" in cyrillic is "П" Good luck withthat one.

Conclusion

Take notice, this in not all inclusive. This is a jumping off point. They use charactersfor adjoining letters that are, and are not seperated by a space. (Yes, most aren't listed)Practice a little! There are several other commonly used cyrillic characters like "B", being the English "V". Taking a few mental notes here and there will make your travelsall the more interesting."I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply.Being willing is not enough; we must do." -Leonardo da VinciHappy Hunting!-Val
